The Green Lantern Reading Challenge

Alright, so to go in conjunction with my 30 Graphic Novels to Read in 2013 goal, I have decided to create three challenge-within-a-challenge goals to read, and will be posted over the course of this week. First off though, we start with The Green Lantern Reading Challenge.

My aim over the course of this challenge is to read the entirety of Geoff John’s run on Green Lantern. I’ve only read Blackest Night and the first three issues of the New 52 Reboot, so this should be a fun read – as I intend to start right from the beginning with Rebirth and work my way forward from there. And to clear it up for you, here are the list of titles that are in the series that I intend to read. I will aim to get physical copies of these books where possible, but if no physical copies are available then I will use digital comic stores such as Comixology. But I’d rather have the comics in print, as I don’t know about you – but a collection of the following Green Lantern titles all stacked next to each other would look pretty Awesome.

All blurbs are copied and pasted from the DC website. I have used one of the reading orders found on this forum thread to inform me which order to read the Green Lantern series in. (With a few select omissions, such as Blackest Night, which I have already read, but would go after Agent Orange. The Green Lantern: Blackest Night is also missed out because I couldn’t find a link to it on the DC website, as with Secret Origins, Brightest Day & War of the Green Lanterns, but I intend to read as many of those as possible, so click on the link if you want to find the full list)

Green Lantern Rebirth

The sold out 6-issue miniseries event of 2004-2005 — written by Geoff Johns (THE FLASH, TEEN TITANS) with art by Ethan Van Sciver and Prentis Rollins — is collected for the first time, complete with the preview story from Wizard Magazine! Hal Jordan was considered the greatest Green Lantern of them all. But Jordan lost control, allowed himself to be corrupted and transformed into the villainous Parallax. Later, Jordan reappeared and made the ultimate sacrifice — a sacrifice that allowed him to become the Spectre, the Wrath of God.

After several years of activity on Earth, The Spectre became restless and sought a way to prove himself worthy of that noble reputation. See how a man born without fear and seeking to rebuild his life, puts cosmic forces into motion that will have repercussions not only on Earth but across the universe.

Meanwhile, the Guardians of the Universe find dissent within their ranks as a bizarre prophecy is fulfilled.

green lantern The Sinestro Corps War Vol.2

The hottest story of 2007 reaches its explosive finale in this hardcover volume collecting Green Lantern #24-25 and Green Lantern Corps #16-19! Sinestro — Hal Jordan’s former mentor turned archnemesis — has gathered an army of soldiers fueled by the fear they instill in others. Former Green Lantern Kyle Rayner has been possessed by the entity known as Parallax and now assists the Sinestro Corps in cutting a swath of evil across the universe. Trapped in the depths of the Sinestro Corps’ Citadel and face-to-face with the Guardian of Sinestro’s army of fear, Hal Jordan must find the willpower to battle these terrible foes.

Green Lantern Rage of the Red Lanterns

The War of Light begins in this hardcover collection! First, a ruthless, by-the-books new task force of Green Lanterns known as the Alpha Lanterns is born, creating tension within the heroic ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. Then, Hal Jordan battles for his life when the Red Lantern Corps, a brutal brigade of monsters fueled by rage, attacks! But nothing could prepare the heroes for the arrival of even more colored Lanterns! Featuring some of today’s best artists including Shane Davis (SUPERMAN/BATMAN), Ivan Reis (GREEN LANTERN) and Mike McKone (TEEN TITANS)! Collects GREEN LANTERN #26-28, #36-38 and FINAL CRISIS: RAGE OF THE RED LANTERNS #1.

Green Lantern Agent Orange

“This is comic book storytelling at its absolute finest.” — IGNA new chapter in the prelude to the massive BLACKEST NIGHT event is collected in this hardcover featuring GREEN LANTERN #39-42! A war of light explodes across the Vega System — and the Green Lantern Corps, led by Hal Jordan, must battle the bizarre Orange Lantern Corps and its leader, Agent Orange, possibly the most vile being in the universe. Plus, the Guardians’ pact with the criminals of the universe is revealed.

[See the introduction for why I go directly from Agent Orange to Sinestro]

Green Lantern Sinestro

The first six issues of the star-spanning series from DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 are collected in hardcover, with stories by superstar writer Geoff Johns and artist Doug Mahnke! There’s an unexpected new Green Lantern in town: Sinestro. And now, this renegade GL has set a course for Korugar with one purpose: To free his homeworld from the scourge of his own Sinestro Corps – with the not-so-willing help of Hal Jordan!

Green Lantern Revenge of the Black Hand

• Hal Jordan and Sinestro find themselves investigating a crime that leads them deep into the homeworld of the Indigo Tribe. As their situation grows more and more dire, the unlikely team of these two Green Lanterns uncovers a secret that will change the GL Corps forever!

I believe that’s everything released so far. So including the titles that I haven’t already mentioned, there’s a total number of 15 titles unless I miscounted. So it should be a fun read. Let me know if you intend to stop by for the ride, and what challenges you plan on setting yourself comics wise. Next up I’ll go into detail about my Sandman Challenge.
